草
1、(形声。从艸,早声。小篆艸,象两棵草形,是草的本字。今“草”字系假借字,原是“皂”的本字。《说文》:“草,草斗,栎(lì)实也”(栎实:栎树的荚果,即皂角)。借为“草木”之“草”以后,则另造“皂”字来代替。本义:栎实)。
2、草本植物的总称。
艸,百卉也。从二屮。会意。经传皆以草为之。汉书多以屮为之。---《说文》
